Modular Floating Dock

for ship-to-shore access in a restricted port area

In port and maritime contexts, creating a secure connection between the quay and a ship's entrance is not always a simple task, especially when structural constraints prevent the construction of new fixed infrastructures. In these scenarios, the need for a quick, stable solution capable of adapting to sea level changes becomes a priority.

In the Gulf of Trieste, Aquageo supported a leading international maritime company in the design and installation of a modular floating dock, solving a complex logistical challenge in a port area subject to architectural constraints.

The challenge: creating a secure access without invasive structural interventions

The client needed to establish a continuous connection between a fixed dock on land and the entrance of a moored ship. However, the port's configuration presented several challenges.

  • Structural constraints: the impossibility of installing additional traditional or fixed docks.

  • Operational needs: the need for a highly stable platform for personnel and crew transit.

  • Environmental variability: the need for a system capable of compensating for tides and wave motion without losing alignment with the ship's entrance during normal water level variations and vessel oscillations.

The Aquageo solution: modular docks with Idea Dock technology

To overcome the port's infrastructural limits, a modular floating dock based on the Idea Dock cube system was chosen, a technology that combines strength, versatility, and quick assembly.

Technical features of the structure

  • High buoyancy: the system ensures a load capacity exceeding 200 kg/m², ideal for industrial use and frequent transit.

  • Double-layer configuration: the use of stacked cubes allowed for greater structural rigidity, increasing resistance to marine stresses and overall stability.

  • Safety and walkability: the surface was coated in non-slip marine aluminum, ensuring a solid base in all weather conditions, completed with side railings for personnel protection.

  • Total modularity: thanks to sets of dedicated accessories and screws, the structure can be reconfigured or expanded to become a work platform or technical barge.

The installation: stability in the Gulf of Trieste

The project was carried out in the Gulf of Trieste, a context characterized by meteomarine conditions that require high-performance equipment. The modular nature of the dock allowed for:

  • absorbing water level variations, keeping the connection always operational;

  • ensuring walkability stability even in the presence of wave motion;

  • guaranteeing a perfect alignment between the fixed dock on land and the ship's access, facilitating boarding and disembarking operations.
